Rhizome sprig harvesting and planting

Hi to all you rhizome and sprig harvesters and planters: JSprigger here to continue to lead the Bio-Energy of renewable energy into the future. We at SCI will endeavor to design and build the best equipment for harvesting and planting Rhizomes and Sprigs. We will offer advice and private consulting on the subject of this  blog  but not on  varieties. We had agreed to partner with a rising company in the industry but felt a need to continue to stand alone and maintain the direction we have had for 23 years. What we will need is feedback from customers and none customers. Failure in the Renewable Energy Business is not an option. We must win this battle for the future of our Country and the world. It for sure is not a cure all but a part of the puzzle that helps form the future. Do you remember when there was no bubbling crude, well I do not but can read history and know it has not been long in the scheme of world history. As a Matter of fact it would be hard to imagine being without it, but it as life, will surely pass one day. You can search us out at www.spriggerschoice.com

We have a lot of work to do to get what must happen accomplished so let’s get to it. I'm listening.

Those with Chemical weed control knowledge are welcome to add to this post.

Growers or companies promoting a particular variety or species are also welcome to post.

  1. Hi to all and some new ones again.

I left out the date. February 22nd at 10:00 AM till.
We have determined a price for the sprigs. It will be $125.00 Bushel (1.24 cubic’) There will be no strings attached.
We will have some burlap bags to put the rhizomes in if you do not have a container. This a way you can wet them and store in a cooler if available till you plant.
We do not know how many will be for sale. Please let me know your request and we will try to be fair to all that day.

Mr. and Mrs. Futral are delightful people that all will enjoy meeting.
Mrs. Futral has offered to provide water and a snack for those that attend so having some ideas as too how many that will be attending will be appreciated.

    OLD mail,
Hi, You are one of several that are invited to a Miscanthus Rhizome harvesting and planting operation at the Futral Farm. We have about 1/10th acres of 4 year old Miscanthus to harvest and transplant. We will be planting about 5 acres no-till and conventional at the farm. Dewey lee will be using some for his study and Spriggers Choice will be using some at home for local use to study harvesting and planting the rhizomes.
There will be some rhizome from this field for sell. They will be sold by the bushel (1.24 cu ft. ) We plan to have burlap sacks for the rhizomes or you can bring a container of your liking. There will not be a tremendous amount of this material. The Futral farm will sell these with no strings attached. Prices will be determined by the date or on the day of harvest. Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing any of these rhizomes. Pictures attached taken during January 2011.
Please also reply if you are interested in coming. No Credit cards.

The field is located off of I-75 exit 205 [Jackson-Griffin highway] west to 1st paved road right [less than a ¼ miles] then proceed about 21/2 miles on the right side of the road. You will see our equipment. We plan to be starting around 10:00 am. It is about 30 miles south of the Atlanta Airport.

  2. Hi to all, We had a good field test of some our new designed equipment for Harvesting and Planting Miscanthus Rhizomes. There were people from Canada, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and some other I did not know were from.
It was a day of learning, meeting and making new friends, and some were customers that had actually bought the machines we were using.

I learned a lot that only come when you put ideas in the field working. There were positive and negative comments and we will work with both. But I believe that all was mostly positive. The main things was that our customer that had put money to back up his mouth liked our product very much. He will be feeding back to us information that he learns as he uses the machines. Three in all a Lift Plow, 42” Rhizome harvester and a 4 row x 30” wide No-Till Rhizome Root Planter with a high capacity self feeding system.

We also have several machines going to customers in Kansas, Texas, Missouri, and North Arkansas.

Again thanks to all that attended and for the comments and for enduring for 4 hours as we had to change tractors several times and also had to change setting on the machine as this was the first time using them in this old of Miscanthus material. [4 year old] As expected there was some dead rhizomes and some hollow ones. The ground was very tough but using the lift plow before the harvester sure did help. Lifting one to two year old rhizomes planted on spacing that will fill in the area with rhizomes will help in harvesting of the rhizomes. There will also be less dead hollow material. These plants were planted on 36" x 36" and even after 4 years growth we were harvesting a lot of dirt between the clumps of rhizomes. We would like to see a good mat of rhizomes across the field that will add tensile strength in the digging process.

We will be posting several new videos in the next few days. They will be on you-tube and our web site.
This is our you-tube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/SpriggersChoice#p/u

Sprigger’s Choice will be planting some Miscanthus locally on our farm to work with the study of harvesting and planting the Rhizomes.

A very big THANK YOU!! to the Mr. Walter and Mrs. Renee Futral and their local friends for being the gracious host that they are and for the meal they provided. If nothing comes of the day’s event other that meeting them and making new friends the day would of have not been spent in vain.

Thanks also go out to Dewey Lee, Crop Specialist at Tifton, Georgia for helping put this together. I look forward to working with Dewey because I know I will get the hard truth about this new product we are working with. We will support Dewey and encourage other to do the same so that we can have independent study of this product.
I know he will be responsible in handling the funding he receives for doing the studies. I am suggesting that we offer to start a Independent Study fund for his work to go along with the funding he receives from other sources.

Of course Dewey would have to agree to this and advise how he would like it set up. But if he takes this in a positive way I am ready pledge $5,000.00 with first one match it.

If you call him and talk to him about it he will probably sound shocked. Well that because I just suggested it.

And one final thought. Bath all of this in prayer for God’s Will to be done.

Proverbs 8:17 "I [wisdom] love those who love me [wisdom]; And those who diligently seek me [wisdom] will find me [wisdom].
